prayer partnerships
"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." — 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
the power of prayer
There is amazing power in prayer. It’s common to think that prayer is something that just serves as a placebo, to calm us down or make us feel better in tough situations. But prayer is more than just platitudes. Prayer can be so powerful! When you pray to Jesus, not only does He listen to you, but He also responds back! Can you imagine having a conversation with the Creator of the Universe?
"For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him?" — Deuteronomy 4:7
So how do you tap into this amazing communion with God?
STep 1: Pray to jesus
First, you need to make sure you’re praying to the right person. That person is Jesus. He is the link between us and the Father. Jesus Himself says, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) And then a little bit later he says, “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I [, Jesus,] will do it.” (John 14:13-14)
Step 2: pray with your heart
God isn’t a part of this physical world; he is spiritual and if you want to reach him, you have to do so in the spiritual realm. Thankfully, He created every human being with the ability to do this — through our heart, or rather, our “spirit.” Did you know that you have a “spirit?” Check out our spiritual mentorship page to learn more. Again Jesus says, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24)
NEXT STEPS:
All this might sound kind of crazy, but it really works! If you’re serious about getting into the practice of prayer, then we want to help. If you contact us about getting involved with prayer, then you will be assigned a prayer partner, a believer in Jesus who has had a lot of experience praying and having daily, spiritual interactions with God. They will help you learn how to pray, how to use your “spirit,” and how to listen for God’s words.
Tips & Tricks for Effective Prayer
If you're looking to "up" your prayer game, here are some additional tips to keep in mind!
Pray out loud, not just in your head.
Can God hear your thoughts? Definitely!! So why pray out loud? Sometimes, saying things out loud can help to make our prayers real to ourselves, and there can be a lot of power in that. In fact, saying things out loud can be a good way to engage the Spirit in your prayer.
… if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
— Romans 10:9-10
Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.
— 1 Corinthians 12:3
Have faith
Jesus speaks really boldly about believing prayer. Faith has tremendous power, and all you need, apparently, is a mustard seed’s worth!
And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”
— Matthew 21:21-22
And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
— Hebrews 11:6
Be real
This is a broader piece of advice and can have a few meanings. For example, Jesus tells us not to make prayer into a spectacle or use it as a status symbol. He also tells us to keep it simple and to the point; no need to make it sound eloquent or poetic. Also, there is no prayer too small or too big. Whatever is on your mind, just pray about it!!
And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
— Matthew 6:5-6
And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
— Matthew 6:7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
— Philippians 4:6-7
There is power in numbers
Grab a friend; meet with a prayer group; share your prayer request with other believers. The Bible has things to say about not being alone in prayer:
“Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
— Matthew 18:19-20
Pray multiple times for your request
If you’re serious about your prayer request, then you won’t just pray about it once. If you don’t care about your request, then why should God care? But God does care for you and cares deeply about the things that you need. This interesting parable compares God to an unrighteous judge. Which is weird, right? But in the story, the unrighteous judge eventually gives in to the demands of the widow. So Jesus’ point is essentially, ‘if the unrighteous judge gives in, how much more will God (who is actually righteous btw) answer those who ask him for stuff?’
And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
